Why shouldn't you gift animals for Christmas?

Dogs and cats are not gifts, but lives to be cared for.

Christmas is a period of joy, expressions of love and of course letters to Santa. During this time many children write their letters including in the list "I want a dog", "I want a cat" as a gift, among other pets that are also added to their list as hamsters, birds, among others.

That request that our little ones make with so much illusion is a great responsibility for us adults. It is important that parents, grandparents, relatives or friends should think about the seriousness of "gifting" a pet. We must be aware that a pet will be not only a companion, but an addition of a new member to the family and not a simple gift.

Pets are vulnerable individuals that require a lot of care and that cannot be "returned" as when returning any item purchased in a store.

Three out of ten animals that are given as Christmas gifts end up abandoned. Normally all shelters are full throughout the year, but when the holidays are over, they receive even more animals.

Several experts on this subject, among them the animal protection associations, recommend that as adults we should evaluate our situation at home very well before deciding to have a pet. Is there time to take care of it? Can we go for walks and games? Can we give them the care and attention they deserve, including medical care? It is important that everyone in the household assume the commitment to care for the pet and not pretend that a child should take full responsibility for this task.

Many pets come into the home because children want them to, but when the novelty wears off, they tend to delegate the care of the animals to their parents. Therefore, it is very important for parents to educate their children about the responsibility of respecting and caring for pets.

The decision to adopt a pet during the holiday season goes beyond the magic of Christmas and the happiness we will bring to our loved one. It is also the responsibility and commitment to the pet on the part of its caregiver for many years to come. Let's not forget that it will also be a shared responsibility since that new 4-legged member will make the whole family happy.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2023!
